Plot[edit]
Bhaktawar (Danny Denzongpa) rules over the docks in Mumbai, treating his workers like slaves. Despite his general dissatisfaction with this regime, Tiger (Amitabh Bachchan) extorts money from the dock workers for his father Pratap (Deepak Shirke), who in turn works as an enforcer for Bhaktawar.
Tiger is in love with his best friend Gonsalves (Romesh Sharma)'s sister Jumma (Kimi Katkar). Gonsalves is against Bhaktawar's policies and is killed by Bhaktawar and in the subsequent fall-out, Tiger's father and step-mother also die, leaving two young step-brothers Kumar and Vijay with Tiger.
Tiger immediately sets out to kill Bhaktawar but is stopped by Inspector Girdhar (Anupam Kher). Girdhar reminds Tiger to fulfil his dying step-mother's wish and take care of his brothers while leaving the police to deal with Bhaktawar. Girdhar and his faithful sidekick Havaldar Arjun Singh (Annu Kapoor) steal money from Bhaktawar's safe and set fire to Bhaktawar's house to destroy any evidence, killing Bhaktawar's wife and his daughter. Police later arrest Bhaktawar for killing Tiger's family and sends him to jail. Tiger escapes in a train and Jumma refuses to stay with Tiger since he has to take care of his stepbrothers. Jumma and Tiger promise to reunite in the future. Girdhar bombs the train carrying Tiger and his brothers to eliminate any possible witnesses of his crime, but Tiger escapes.
Tiger renames himself as Shekhar and is a respectable farmer and timber merchant in Ooty. Kumar (Rajnikanth) is a police officer who is married to Aarti (Deepa Sahi), with a young daughter Jyoti (Sanjana). The youngest brother Vijay (Govinda) is a college student. Vijay is in love with Anita (Shilpa Shirodkar), daughter of General Rana Pratap Singh (Kader Khan), who wants his daughter to get married to a military officer. Shekhar and his brothers lead a happy family life. Neither of the two stepbrothers seems to have any memory of their time in Mumbai and both regard Shekhar as their elder brother. Jumma is now a successful actress, while Girdhar and Havaldar are leading a luxurious life due to the stolen money of Bhaktawar.
Bhaktawar is released from jail and is misguided by Giridhar in believing that Tiger killed Bhaktawar's family. To seek revenge, Bhaktawar tracks down Tiger in Ooty. He kidnaps Aarti and Jyothi and tells them the truth about Shekhar. Meanwhile, Kumar also finds the true identity of Shekhar and is upset since it was due to his brother Sekhar, his family was kidnapped. However, all the misunderstandings are cleared by Jumma when she explains Vijay and Kumar about their past and the sacrifices done by Sekhar to make them lead a respectable life.
Later Tiger along with Kumar and Vijay rescue Aarti and Jyoti and explain to Bhaktawar that it was Giridhar who has killed his family. Bhaktawar then ties himself along with Giridhar to a bomb and they both die due to the explosion. The film ends with the family happily united.

Production[edit]
Hum was shot in various locations including Mumbai,[2]Ooty,[3] and Mauritius.[4] Mukul S. Anand had considered and discussed a potential scene for this film with Rajinikanth, where Amitabh Bachchan's character would help Govinda get a seat in the Police Academy. Anand discarded the scene, because he did not find it suitable. But Rajinikanth felt the scene had the potential to develop into a script for a possible feature film, which resulted into the 1995 Tamil film Baashha.[5]

Finally got to see it, when the local video shop had it, and by complete and utter fluke my parents and I happened to turn up to see what film we could rent out, and there sat 'HUM' literally just arrived. So as I sat down finally with my drinks and snacks for the cinema atmosphere, i went into the film with an open mind trying to forget about all the reviews I heard prior to watching this film.
I can honestly say that I enjoyed the film from start to finish. The film had me tensed up, on the edge of your seat sort of drama with light relief between scenes, is what you require from a film. The film writers had finally (to me anyway) made a story line which captivated it audiences perfectly. Each character had it's own story, but the director made sure this was not detailed too much as this would have prolonged a film unnecessarily, the character of Bakhtawar is fantastically portrayed by Danny Denzongpa who is a total class act anyway. The songs were fantastic, and the club battle between Vijay / Kumar against Captain Attack with the batman theme playing in the background is a great great scene. Rajnikant when he's miming with the cigarette in his mouth is mesmerising! Utter Class.
Overall a film definitely worth watching for all the family, mainly for it's originality. Possibly my favourite 'bollywood' film of all time.

Hum released in 1991 when Amitabh Bachchan already had his national award for Agneepath but with the exception of Aaj Ka Arjun(1990), all his films had flopped. Director Mukul Anand had delivered a masterpiece with Agneepath which sadly flopped. He only tasted success with Insaaf(1987) which reintroduced Vinod Khanna as an action hero. Anyways, Hum is by all means a great film for the early 90s. It was Anand's second hit after Insaaf.
The film tells the story of Tiger a good hearted criminal who takes weekly money from poor people, his father raised him as a criminal. He is the step son of his father and mother but he loves his younger brothers more than his father does. His father Pratap only serves Bhaktawar who is an evil person. Tiger is in love with Jumma who's brother Gonsalves dares to stand up against Bhaktawar. Because he dares to do so, he gets killed. Tiger promises to take revenge, he does so by beating up Bhaktawar. However, his family gets killed, and he has to flee from Bombay. He changes his name to Shekhar, raises his brothers and hides his criminal identity. The brothers grow up and their lives are good, everything is fine. However, Tiger's past catches up to him and now they have kidnapped Kumar's wife and daughter. Watch the action packed climax to see the ending.
Direction by Mukul Anand is fantastic, he does a good job after Agneepath. The start is OK but Amitabh's entry is simply superb. Amitabh's confrontation with his step father is good, Anupam Kher does his silly brand of comedy which works in parts. The scene where Amitabh's parents die is decent but the dialogs drag the story a bit there. Amitabh fighting Danny, Danny's house burning down and Danny thinking Amitabh did it is well handled. Anupam Kher being the player is responsible for this. The second half is good but irritating whenever that overacting Captain Attack comes. However, the fight scene in the club with Govinda and Rajnikanth is funny. The rest including the climax has also been well handled.
Amitabh Bachchan excels from every aspect, he is flawless as Tiger and he is superb as Shekhar. The anger, the pain, the comedy, and the action has all been superbly done by him. Rajnikanth is good, for once he doesn't ham it up like some of his other movies from the 90s. Govinda is good as well, he excels in emotional and comedy scenes. Kimi Katkar hams it up badly in parts, she is good in serious scenes only. Shilpa Shirodkar is decent but she only had a small role. The rest provide decent support.
Music is excellent, the Jumma Chumma De song was a big hit and it created a lot of hype. The family song EK Dusre Se is also a good song, the rest are good too. Action is very good, it is reasonable too. There are no cheesy stunts like most of the 80s films had.
On the whole, Hum is an excellent action film despite being a typical action film. Amitabh's action, Rajnikanth's cigarette, and Govinda's comedy came together and gave a superhit film.

'Hum' is well-written, well-acted & marvelously directed by the late genius. Anand has his stamp all-over the film & emerges a big winner. I loved the film, more so, for the execution Anand has given to this story. Sure, The Screenplay is entertaining, but Anand's work in here stands out! A Special Mention for the fantastic Music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Performance-Wise: Amitabh Bachchan is in his element. Rajinikanth is pretty decent. Govinda is terrific, as always. Kimi Katkar is proficient. Deepa Sahi is fair. Shilpa Shirodkar is passable. Danny is simply spell-binding, while Anupam Kher shows a menacing side of his. Kader Khan is dependable.
On the whole, 'Hum' demands a viewing, thanks to the high-class execution given by Anand.

Movie is a case study for all movie fans regarding exactly how a multi- starrer and prime entertainer should be made. Right blend of comedy at right time added all spice to an already good film.
Govinda, Rajnikanth provided equal support to Amitabh led movie. Villains of this movie were actually of another type which we haven't seen before. So lot of things happened which we didn't expect them to be so.
Lovely entertainer, awesome music, lovely acting. Lovely camera work, locations. 10/10 .

I watched it again on freesat channel and youtube as well but there're some scenes are missing. I remember very well, I watched it on an original video (Apollo) and I also recorded it on channel 4 in 15 years ago, these scenes still there but sadly I lost it.
Deleted Scenes
1. Govinda's fake trophy. 2. Amitabh went to college to see Govinda's headteacher. 3. Extra song before ending credit - 'Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum'.

The songs were chart-busters and I still listen to them. The lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi and the music directors were Laxmikant- Pyarelal My favourites were either Jhomma Chumma or Ek Doosre se. Anupum Kher was OK but Danny was great as Bhaktawar. The action was superb, especially in the end scene where Anupum Kher and Amitabh are fighting in the helicopter.

Direction by MUKUL ANAND is good Music by LP is fab, be it Jhumma Chumma which was a rage though the picturisation is sort of crude, Sanam Mere Sanam by Amit Kumar is superb too, Kaagaz Kalam is nice, Ek Doosre Se too is fab
Amitabh Bachchan excels in the role, in the first half he is like a rowdy though a bit too loud at times, but yet his drunk scene is fab as usual, but in the second half his mature act too is well handled by him, however the idea of showing him way his head around when he gets angry does look odd Kimi Katkar is loud, Rajnikant is good, Govinda is fab too Deepa Sahi is adequate, Shilpa Shirodkar is fair. Anupam Kher and Annu Kapoor annoy, though Anupam plays his part well yet his track irritates and he overacts at times Danny is fab in his role, Amongst rest Kader Khan is superb, Deepak Shirke and rest are okay.

Movie, has many goofs, yet fine to watch since you can see Amitabh and Rajini together. Cigarette act of Rajinikanth is good to see, he flicks it and puts into the mouth sudden - it looks like graphically made, but he does it.
The movie happens in Mumbai, Ooty, and Bangalore. All Bangaloreans should watch the movie. Amitabh has acted well. Govinda's role is like a dude. I don't know the names of the heroins, but the 'Jumaa Chumma' song is the best in the film. I hate when the little girl sometimes start singing suddenly in the plot of the movie.

In the climax sequence, Amitabh & Rajni go in search of Rajni's family to Bangalore but the final fights take place in Bombay. The sea is also shown.
Anupam Kher who is shown as a billionaire was not at all serious in this movie, always joking, making funny statements, one wonders how he ran a business where he could sell Battle tanks to Indian army. Joke businessman.
In a scene there are goons with machine guns, battle tanks (run by private goons in India, which is a distant mirage even in dreams) bare handed Rajnikanth & Amitabh come running opposite the direction to where the goons are shooting. They over power the goons & kill them.
The film fully is on Amitabh, he is the only hero & actor in the movie. The film succeeded because of the supreme actor that he is, he overshadows Rajnikanth & Govinda very easily in every scene. Anupam Kher ,Danny did better than Rajni & Govinda.
One gets the feeling Mukul Anand tried to make an Action film & ended up with comedy. The editing, the direction is so flawed that you cant help but keep laughing like I did.
The movie is worth watching only for Amitabh.
